The Power of Biblical Fasting

Extraordinary Intimacy with God, Freedom, and Breakthrough

Fasting is so powerful, yet it is misunderstood and intimidating for some. In this video, I plainly discuss the What, How, When, and Why of Biblical fasting so Christians of all walks of life can understand and begin to implement this life changing spiritual discipline.

Why?

The point of fasting is to choose something that is vital or important to us and temporarily replace it with deliberate and concentrated time with God.  Fasting demonstrates to God just how serious we are about the particular situation or circumstance we need for Him to intervene in.

  • Confession / Repentance
    • Personal.
    • For a Group of Individuals.
    • For a Geographical Area.
  • Petition / Inquire
    • For someone's salvation.
    • For direction, wisdom, or breakthrough in a particular area.
      • Major life decision: college/military, marriage, children, job.
      • Finances.
      • Healing - spiritual, emotional, mental, physical.
      • Relationships - marital tension, strained relationship between friend or family member.
      • Habits & other destructive tendencies / behavior.
  • Mourning
    • To grieve the loss of a loved one or dear friend.
    • To grieve over a tragic event that has occurred.
  • Spiritual Hunger / Desperation
    • When one's spiritual hunger to see God move and act exceeds one's natural hunger for food.
      • Seeking a spiritual breakthrough in one's life, family, church, community.

What?

  • Biblical fasting was normally from food and/or drink.
  • In modern times we also hear of individuals fasting from certain time-consuming activities and habits (this may be a good option if you have a medical condition that prohibits you from fasting food and/or drink).

How?

  • Be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit concerning the type and duration of the fast.
  • Take it one meal and one day at a time.
  • Gradually enter and exit a fast.  Start eliminating certain items from your diet ahead of time so it is not such a shock to your body all at once.  Similarly, when starting to introduce foods again, start with light items like breads, fruits, and vegetables to get your body accustomed to digesting food again.
  • Understand that the first few days of a fast are the hardest.  This is because toxins are leaving your body and if you normally consume caffeinated beverages your body will go through a type of withdrawal process.  Drinking plenty of water can help minimize headaches and flush out the toxins from your system.
  • Fast within the power of God's grace.  Allow Him to carry you through the tough moments by simply resting in His presence and focusing on Him and what you want Him to accomplish.
  • Don't allow spiritual pride or condemnation to distract you.  Simply keep moving forward one meal and one day at a time.
  • Remember, it's not about "not eating," it's about spending time and energy going after God in a more deliberate and concentrated way.
